Saving for the climate – the future is golden
ESG 12.09.2024
We all need to pare down – on CO2. It’s no easy feat, but where CO2 emissions are unavoidable, they need not remain uncompensated. Xetra-Gold proudly supports a new project in its commitment to climate protection.
Tackling a global goal together
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. There is a global consensus that global warming must be limited to well below 2 °C – and ideally to 1.5 °C – to prevent catastrophic consequences for the climate and the environment.
Just as it is possible for every individual to reduce their CO2 emissions, from the well-known example of air travel to everyday consumer behaviour, companies are also called upon to take action. They have a responsibility to tackle emissions along their entire value chain. By determining their CO2 footprint, which indicates the total greenhouse gas emissions in tonnes of CO2 equivalents, companies create the basis for targeted measures.
It's all about avoiding, reducing and offsetting, i.e. preventing emissions from the outset, increasing efficiency in existing processes, and, where avoidance or reduction is not possible, offsetting emissions.
For Deutsche Börse Commodities (DBCo) as the issuer of Xetra-Gold, doing its part to protect the climate is an important concern. The greatest source of emissions it can directly impact is logistics. The challenge, therefore, is to support suppliers in reducing their emissions. CO2 emissions are primarily generated during the transport of gold for the product Xetra-Gold. As its issuer, DBCo is committed to offsetting its current CO2 emissions and has anchored this as a goal and annual measure in its sustainability strategy.
Taking responsibility via CO2 offsetting
(Voluntary) carbon offsetting offers a solution for unavoidable emissions by offsetting them elsewhere through climate protection measures. The aim is to offset emissions that arise in one area by financially supporting projects that demonstrably bind or reduce CO2 elsewhere. Offsetting options are available for companies’ entire carbon footprint, individual products or services. Did you know? Portfolios can also be structured with a focus on climate-friendly investments.
Reforestation in Germany with ForTomorrow
Xetra-Gold supports the non-profit company ForTomorrow and its reforestation projects in Germany.
Their mission: to create climate-resilient mixed forests in areas previously not forested to bind CO2 from the air. The new forests are protected in the long term by the German Federal Forest Act.
The message remains: Keep at it! – year by year.
